Ableton Colorado Monthly Workshop

LivePA : Integrating Instruments and the Laptop

Mark Mosher will not be presenting, but this image really captures LivePA Photo by Hong Waltzer

LivePA lacks a solid definition. Under this broad and sometimes stigmatizing moniker falls a wide assortment of ideas and methods. Join us Sunday as we dive into the real heat and talk analog elements and integrating (legacy) instruments into the setup via :

  • Mixing Boards
  • External Effects Processors
  • Decoupled portable rigs
  • Scalable setups
  • Really nice cases

Marc has been working in LivePA ideas for a decade, but when early on the term LivePA was not part of the common lexicon. Instead we called it “new”.  The evening includes:

  • Defining LivePA and some of the core methods for laptop and legacy gear
  • Integration of Mixing board(s)
  • Integration of effects pedals
  • Parallel processing
  • Live Mixing
  • Scaling for larger venues
  • Gear selection (do and do not list)
  • Case and portability considerations
  • Decreasing set up time and increasing organization
  • Best practice and considerations for on stage use

Finally we will end by completely breaking down Marc’s LivePA rig featuring :

  • Dave Smith Analog synthesizer
  • Electro Harmonix Analog Delay
  • FMR Audio RNC Compressor side-chained to Ableton ducking the analog synthesizer (oh yeah!)
  • Custom case (including power solution)
  • Soundcraft Notepad Mixer
  • Static and friction fit packing
  • An obscene addiction to Velcro
  • Ableton of course!

This is the “current” iteration of Marc’s rig - the early 2012 Build.
